For a very brief period, Anthony Barr was engaged to the Jets.
The free agent linebacker agreed to terms with Gang Green when the legal tampering period opened on Monday but by Tuesday morning had a change of heart and decided to stick with the Vikings.
It wasn’t about the money — the Jets reportedly offered more than the Vikings’ five-year $67.5 million deal — so what caused him to back out of the deal?
“It was mostly when I hung up the phone after saying, ‘Yeah, I can do New York,’“ Barr told NFL Network. “My stomach dropped, I kind of get some cold sweats. It was like you’re about to go down the altar and marry the wrong woman. I think I’m making a bad choice. I did what I felt was right for myself.”
Apparently, that meant sticking with the team he spent the first five seasons of his career with and the only NFL home he’s known.
“I wanted to be a Viking,” he said. “It’s the team that drafted me five years ago. It’s home. I’ve done a lot of stuff in the community with my foundation. My teammates are my family, this coaching staff has done so much for me not only as a person, but as a player.”
The Jets and their fans, meanwhile, have been left scratching their heads at the abrupt about-face, but if anyone has been reaching out to Barr through social media channels, well, he’s not looking right now.
“I’ve tried to stay away as much as possible,” he said. “I never really said anything other than to my agent. It’s not my fault that it leaked, I didn’t leak all that information. At the end of the day, I’m the one that has to live this life, man. I gotta be happy going to work every day. I know I made the right decision.”
