The Devils inked No. 1 overall pick Jack Hughes to an entry-level contract on Friday morning, a three-year pact carrying an annual average value of $925,000.
“It’s obviously awesome,” Hughes said in the a Twitter video accompanying the announcement. “You dreamed of playing in the NHL, you grow up dreaming of that, thinking about it, looking outside the window at school dreaming of that moment. A contract is another step towards that goal.”
The 18-year-old forward was long tabbed as the top pick for the 2019 draft and excelled in his draft year, totaling 34 goals and 112 points in 50 games with the USNTDP. He also skated for the US in the U20, U18 and IIHF World Championship, becoming the youngest American player to ever suit up for the US in the senior tournament.
