Hilaria Baldwin mourns the loss of her pregnant belly after suffering a miscarraige

Hilaria Baldwin is mourning the loss of her pregnancy after suffering a miscarriage earlier this week, and on Wednesday she confided in Instagram followers that she misses her growing baby bump.

‘I was so proud of my belly,’ the 35-year-old wrote alongside side-by-side photos of herself her posing in profile before and after her second-trimester miscarriage.

‘My bump was taken away so swiftly in a day… Tuesday. And I miss it… but the body knows and it’s elasticity doesn’t lie,’ she said.

Hilaria announced on Monday that she’d suffered a miscarriage, losing the baby girl she’d been expecting with husband Alec Baldwin, 61.

This would have been the couple’s fifth child.

On Wednesday, she showed her followers how quickly her rounded belly had shrunk following a D&C procedure.

In the first photo, which she had originally posted on Monday, she is pictured holding up her shirt to show her belly while still pregnant.

‘I shared this photo… talking about how much my belly was growing,’ she said, reflecting in an Instagram Stories post.

In the second snap, taken on Wednesday, her tummy looks nearly flat again.

Hilaria also shared a few updates with her followers, explaining why she’s being so candid about her loss and how she is getting through it.

‘I don’t know much to update you on how I am doing. I feel like documenting this can be helpful for others struggling… even if it is with a different sadness in your life,’ she wrote.

‘Also just to give you a sense of how I’m doing,’ she went on. ‘I apologize in advance for some thoughts that might be slightly inarticulate… I’m processing and don’t have this all figured out.’

She went on to list some ‘things that have helped me emotionally so far,’ including ‘hearing from all of you and knowing I’m not alone,’ ‘spending time with my babies… they can’t but help make me smile and happy,’ and ‘staying busy… I’m returning to work tomorrow and excited to put my mind on other things.’

She also said she is ‘reflecting on past times of sadness and thinking about how I healed through them’ and ‘thinking about the future and how many bright moments lay ahead for me.’

The mourning mother-of-four also posted photos and video of herself spending time with her little ones. On her stories, she showed herself listening to music with her 15-month-old son Romeo.

She wrote: 'My Leo just lay with me like this for like 25 min today... he doesn't understand what happened, but his soul is so sweet. He helped my heart so much'

Finally, Hilaria uploaded a photo of a plant she bought for her six-year-old daughter Carmen last year. She explained said it never bloomed in the year since they got it, but pink flowers have appeared in the past few days.

She and Alec also have a four-year-old son name Rafael, while Alec has a 23-year-old daughter, Ireland, with his ex Kim Basinger.

Alec, meanwhile, has posted a snap of his two older sons, followed by a photo of the Crysler Building in Manhattan.

‘NY. Look up. Always,’ he wrote poignantly.

Mostly, Alec has let his wife do the talking, and Hilaria has kept followers up-to-date on what she is going through.

On Tuesday, she underwent a D&C procedure to remove the remaining tissue from her uterus, and paused a moment to share a sad, puff-eyed selfie.

‘Eyes swollen from crying, groggy from anesthesia, crampy from the surgery…but I made it and I want you to know that I’m physically ok,’ she wrote.

What is a D&C?

A D&C, also know as dilation and curettage, is a surgical procedure performed on some women after they have suffered a first or second trimester miscarriage.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, around 50 per cent of women who lose a baby in the first few months of pregnancy have to undergo the procedure, and it is more likely to be necessary if the baby was lost after ten weeks.

A D&C is most often recommended to women who miscarry between ten and 12 weeks, and to any patients who have suffered an incomplete miscarriage.

During the procedure, the patient’s cervix is dilated, before the contents of the uterus are removed. This process can be performed either by scraping the uterine wall with a curette instrument or by a suction curettage (also called vacuum aspiration).

D&C procedures are most often carried out in order to ensure that the miscarriage does not cause any complications like infection or hemorrhaging, however the APA also notes that the process can help some women to begin emotional healing after losing a child.

The operation, which is known as surgical management of miscarriage (SMM), or dilation and curettage, is a procedure performed on some women after they have suffered miscarriage.

The patient’s cervix is dilated before the contents of the uterus are removed to ensure that the miscarriage does not cause any complications, like infection or hemorrhaging.

Some patients can undergo the surgery with just a local anesthetic, while others, like Hilaria, are put under a general anesthesia to make the procedure easier.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, around half of women who lose a baby in the first few months of pregnancy have to undergo the procedure, and it is more likely to be necessary if the baby was lost after ten weeks.

A D&C is most often recommended to women who miscarry between ten and 12 weeks, but some who experience a later miscarriage are advised to undergo the procedure as well, as do any patients who have suffered an incomplete miscarriage.

While posting about her own D&C, Hilaria thanked all of the people who have offered her kind words and support in the wake of her devastating news.

‘I’m grateful for my family, friends, doctors and nurses, and all of you who have held my hand through this difficult time. You have no idea how much this means to me. One foot in front of the other…now I begin the healing journey.’

Later that day, Hilaria found comfort in a video of her son Rafa, who sent her a sweet message saying, ‘Hi mama I love you.’

‘This was the best thing to see when I woke up,’ she captioned the short clip, which appears to have been sent to her by a friend watching her kids.

Since she first revealed the news about her miscarriage on Monday, Hilaria has been posting regular updates on Instagram about how she is dealing with the loss.

She shared a video of herself speaking to daughter Carmen about the miscarriage, before returning to Instagram Stories on Tuesday morning to thank her followers for their support, while candidly speaking out about her grief.

‘Today opened and it was not a nightmare… just a sad reality,’ she wrote.

‘Thank you for all of your kind and sympathetic words. I didn’t know so many tears existed in the body. I’m trying to be present for my grief but understand that life goes on and there is still beauty, even in darkness.’

The mother-of-four then posted a video of her children in the family’s kitchen in their New York City apartment, writing: ‘This is beauty and I see it.’

Later, she posted a mirror selfie she took as she prepared to head to the doctor’s office.

‘I’m off,’ she wrote alongside the snap, before sharing a checklist of things she needed to do before her appointment: ‘Remove jewelry; makeup free, comfy clothes, painkillers for after.’

Her Tuesday appointment came just 12 or so hours after Hilaria shared the heartbreaking news about her miscarriage on Instagram.

‘We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months,’ Hilaria wrote on her post.

‘We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be. We are so lucky with our 4 healthy babies – and we will never lose sight of this.

‘I’m really devastated right now… I was not expecting this when I went to my scan today. I don’t know what else to say.’

Her tragic post included a video of her in bed being comforted by her six-year-old daughter Carmen soon after she told the child the news.

‘I told Carmen and took this so I could send it to Alec,’ she wrote to her followers.

‘I guess this is a good way to share it with you too. I told her that this baby isn’t going to come after all… but we will try very hard to give her a little sister another time.’

Separately, Hilaria shared an Instagram story of herself cradling her bump in bed with the caption: ‘Today didn’t go as planned. I’m very sad. Tonight is my last night with her… such a strange experience.’

Prior to being told the news, Hilaria had shared several posts on Instagram showing off her growing bump.

Hilaria revealed in September that she was expecting her fifth child with husband Alec, just months after they suffered a first-trimester miscarriage in April.

She revealed news of that miscarriage on Instagram by posting an image of herself in her lingerie holding her small bump.

Hilaria then wrote in the accompanying caption that she was ‘most likely experiencing a miscarriage’.

‘I want to share with you that I am most likely experiencing a miscarriage,’ began the yoga guru in the lengthy.

‘I always promised myself that if I were to get pregnant again, I would share the news with you guys pretty early, even if that means suffering a public loss.’

Days later, she confirmed the news after visiting the doctor in order to get a scan – which revealed that her unborn child did not have a heartbeat.

Once again sharing the news on Instagram, Hilaria posted a family photo and wrote: ‘There was no heartbeat today at my scan…so it’s over…but I have some pretty strong and amazing heartbeats right here.

‘I am surrounded by such love and I feel so fortunate. Thank you all for listening, for your support, and for sharing your own personal stories.

‘We are stronger together…I hope this conversation continues to grow and that we stick together through both the beautiful and challenging moments in life. Much love and appreciation to all of you.’

Since then, Hilaria has continued to document her journey to conceive, even posting two selfies from her D&C appointment in April, including one with her husband who was by her side during the procedure.

‘Doing this… wish me luck,’ Hilaria wrote alongside the first candid snap, while on the second she said: ‘It went well. I’m awake. One foot in front of the other. Thank you for your well wishes.’
