The movie’s official synopsis states that Seberg is, ‘Inspired by real events about the French New Wave darling and Breathless star, Jean Seberg, who in the late 1960s was targeted by Hoover’s FBI, because of her political and romantic involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal.’

Jamal is played by Avengers star Anthony Mackie in the film, which is directed by theater director and first time filmmaker Benedict Andrews.

It also stars Margaret Qualley, Jack O’Connell and Vince Vaughn.

The trailer begins with Stewart recreating Seberg’s famous look to camera from the 1960 film Breathless, the French New Wave film that made her ‘a star’ in the words of an interviewer seen talking to Jean.

‘Who is Jean Seberg?’ asks the journalist.

The trailer then cuts from Jean’s lavish Hollywood life to her increasing involvement in activism, particularly with the 1960s American Civil Rights movement.

‘The revolution needs movie stars,’ Hakim’s activist wife, Dorothy Jamal, tells her, as the Joan Of Arc actress raises a fist in solidarity with a group of Black Power activists.

It’s then revealed that Jean’s actions are being watched by the FBI, represented by two agents played by O’Connell and Vaughn.

‘She’s a sympathizer sir, I think she could be useful,’ they tell their boss.

We then see Seberg begin an affair with Hakim – a move that could destroy both their marriages.

The actress realizes the FBI have ‘tapped our phones’.

‘I keep hearing these little clicks on the line,’ she tells Hakim, as the FBI boss tells his agents that their job is to ‘cheapen her image in the eyes of the public’.

‘They’re pushing her too hard, she’s coming apart,’ warns O’Connell’s agent character as we see Seberg begin to spiral out of control.

‘You run around with a handful of nails, looking for a cross to die on,’ Hakim tells her.

Later, Seberg holds an enormous press conference, telling the assembled journalists, ‘to defame somebody who speaks out against their government, is a type of persecution’.
