He said: ‘I saw X Factor as a way out from the life we were living in Wolverhampton. We were in debt, so it felt like do or die.

‘My parents did really well though and that was never shown on the show. When they said they were putting us in a group, they asked me, “do you need five minutes” and I said yes. I Rang my dad. I felt that this was the end of my [solo] dream.’

My dad said: ‘You can be 1/5 of something or 100% of nothing.’

‘It could be vicious at first – me and Louis did not get along at all – he was the oldest. I didn’t have many friends, didn’t know how to mix with anyone.’

He said of Cheryl and Bear: 'It seems to the outside world that I have everything but there are so many parts missing, uncertainty is a big thing in my life, I don’t know how long it will last'

‘You know why you’re doing what you’re doing but you wonder what you’re missing out on and ask yourself, “have you got it right”?’

‘So many people get to the end of their life and go “I wish I’d done this and that” I don’t want to be one of those people.
