Man is shot and killed after rushing to save niece from sexual assault

A man was shot and killed by an alleged attacker who was sexually assaulting his niece 17, at their home in Chicago. 

The frightening incident occurred in the 500-block of East 89th Place at about 9.01 pm on Thursday night. 

Police said a suspect broke into to the home through a window and then began to sexually assault a 17-year-old girl in her bedroom.

The victim’s 66-year-old uncle heard her cry out for help during the alleged assault and had rushed in from another part of the house to help her.

Police said the attacker then shot the man in the head and back. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

ABC7 reported that the victim was identified to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as James Lewis.

His niece was transported to Trinity Hospital was said to be in stable condition, police told the outlet. 

Eugene Booze, who claimed he lived beside family for about 35 years, said the deceased man was  ‘the best neighbor in the world, a very nice man.’

Booze had no idea anything was wrong until he and his wife saw police swarming around their backyard.

He said that there is ‘not too much drama in this neighborhood’ and had on recollection of any shootings taking place in other parts of the area. 

Cops claimed a ‘possible offender’ who ran from the crime scene was taken into custody by responding officers.

Police said charges were pending against the man in custody as they continued to investigate the incident.
