Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman apologises for joking that Karim Zoual WOULDN’T make it to Blackpool

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman has apologised for making a jibe about Karim Zeroual following his mistake-laden performance in Saturday’s show.

The presenter joked that she would bring Karim ‘back a stick of rock’ from Blackpool if he was eliminated this week, after he was left in tears following a mistake in his Viennese Waltz.

But after it was revealed on Sunday’s results show that Karim, 25, and his professional dance partner Amy Dowden, 28, had made it through to next week, Claudia said she was ‘really sorry’ for the joke.

After the show favourites finished with a score of 30 out of 40 following two mistakes from Karim, he tearfully told Claudia that he was ‘gutted’ to have messed up the dance.

Claudia then turned to a still-crying Karim and said: ‘We’ll also have Blackpool rock, and if you’re not there we’ll bring you some back.’

The comment sparked gasps from the audience, and Claudia attempted to backtrack by saying: ‘I don’t mean that…’

But on Sunday Claudia told Karim she was ‘really sorry’ about the joke after he and Amy avoided being one of the two couples in Sunday’s dance off.

She said: ‘First of all I’m really sorry about the rock joke, I was just trying to make you laugh but I felt so bad.’

A friendly Karim then replied: ‘You did make me laugh, don’t be sorry, I wasn’t upset, I was just disappointed about my dance but I love you for that, you know I love you.’

Claudia then asked the star how it felt to be safely through to next week’s show.

She said: ‘I know you love me but I know you were disappointed, how relieved are you to be through?’

The presenter replied: ‘I was shocked, I was adamant I was going to be in that dance off so thank you to everyone supporting, I was just gutted that I messed up really.’

Fans had been quick to call out Claudia for the ‘savage’ dig, though other were quick to defend the star by saying the comment left them in hysterics.

Karim had taken to the floor with Amy to dance a Viennese Waltz to Ed Sheeran’s Give Me Love.

Despite being one of the frontrunners this series, the CBBC presenter made two ‘big mistakes’ during the routine, with the judges stating it must have come down to nerves.

One Strictly fan wrote of Claudia’s comment: ‘Claudia was just BRUTAL to Karim with her comment about bringing rock back *if they’re not there’*… harsh much!’

Another added: ‘Oh DAMN Claudia so the theme is ”awkward” this week…’

A third posted: ‘Wow Claudia punch him while he’s down #Strictly,’ while one fan also tweeted: ‘Harsh Claudia.’

‘Ouch Claudia that was brutal!’ one posted while a fan also tweeted: ‘If you’re not there we’ll bring some back!! Claudia is Queen!!’

An irate viewer also tweeted: ‘First Motsi tells Neil it’s like Alex had an affair, now Claudia’s told an upset Karim than if he doesn’t make it Blackpool they’ll bring him some rock back. I love both of them, but wow!’ [sic]

Meanwhile on Sunday’s show presenter Mike Bushell and his partner Katya Jones faced disappointment as they left the show.

They were in the dance off against Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Michelle Visage, 51, and her partner Giovanni Pernice, 29.

Mike and Katya had already been in the dance off three times and the judging panel voted unanimously to send them home.
